Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I need  therapy?

If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or just not like yourself, therapy could be a helpful step. Whether you’re dealing with stress, anxiety, relationship issues, or just need someone to talk to, therapy offers a supportive environment to work through those challenges. If you’re unsure, we can have a conversation to see if therapy feels like the right fit for you.

What can I expect during my first session?

Your first session is all about getting to know you and understanding your needs. We'll talk about what brings you to therapy, your goals, and any concerns you might have. There’s no pressure to share everything right away—we’ll go at your pace. Together, we’ll start to create a plan that feels right for you. It’s a safe, welcoming space where you can begin to explore whatever is on your mind.

How many sessions do I need?

The number of sessions you'll need really depends on your unique situation and goals. Some people start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others find that more sessions help them work through deeper or more complex issues. Typically, we begin with weekly sessions and then adjust the frequency based on your progress and comfort level. If your challenges involve trauma or more complicated family dynamics, we might explore longer-term treatment together.

Remember, this is your journey, and we'll go at a pace that feels right for you. We’ll regularly check in to make sure the approach is meeting your needs, and you’re always in control of how we proceed.

What do I need to bring to my first session?

For your first session, there's no need to worry about bringing too much. If you have a referral from your GP for Medicare rebates, bringing that along would be helpful. If you have any relevant documents, such as previous assessments or reports, feel free to bring those too, but it's completely okay if you don't have any.

If you've received any forms to fill out before the session, completing them in advance can save us some time, but we can always go through them together if that feels more comfortable. If you're on any medication, it might be useful to note them down, but don't stress if you forget.

Most importantly, just bring yourself as you are. It's normal to feel a bit anxious, but we're here to support you every step of the way. If you have any questions or concerns, we can address them together during our session.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule my appointment?
Can I claim a rebate through Medicare or my private health fund?

At Treetop Psychology, we understand that life can be unpredictable. However, to ensure that all clients have the opportunity to book sessions, we require a 48 business hour notice for cancellations. If a cancellation is made within this timeframe, the full session fee will be charged.

This policy is in place because the time reserved for you is specifically dedicated to your session, and preparation is undertaken to tailor the session to your needs. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

Yes, you can often claim a rebate through Medicare or your private health fund, depending on your situation.

If you have a referral from your GP under a Mental Health Care Plan, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate of $92.90 per session for up to 10 sessions per calendar year. For this, just bring your referral and Medicare card to your session, and we can help process the rebate for you.

If you're paying privately, you might also be able to claim a partial rebate through your private health insurance. The amount of the rebate will depend on your health fund and level of coverage. We recommend checking with your health fund before your session to confirm what’s covered under “General Psychologist Consultation.” Just keep in mind that you can’t claim both a Medicare rebate and a health fund rebate for the same session.

Do you offer telehealth or online sessions
Do you provide treatment through the Workers Compensation or CTP schemes?

Yes, we offer both in-person and online sessions. Telehealth is a great option if you prefer the comfort of your own space or if getting to the office is difficult. The process is straightforward, and we’ll help you get set up so that you can focus on your session without any technical worries.

Yes, we do provide treatment through both the Workers Compensation and CTP (Compulsory Third Party) schemes. If you’ve been injured at work or in a motor vehicle accident, psychological support can be a crucial part of your recovery process. Our psychologists are experienced in working within these schemes and can help you navigate the process.

What are your fees and do you bulk bill?

At Treetop Psychology, our fees reflect the experience, expertise, and costs involved in providing high-quality psychological care. While the recommended rate for psychology sessions is $300 per hour according to the Australian Association of Psychologists Inc. (AAPi), we aim to offer services at a reasonable price, making therapy accessible while still maintaining the standard of care our clients deserve.

We understand that financial circumstances vary, and not everyone is in a position to pay the full fee. On occasion, our psychologists may offer discounted rates clients who are in need, for a limited time. If you feel you may be eligible for this, please don't hesitate to discuss your situation with us.

For more information about our current fees, or to explore options, feel free to reach out directly and we’ll be happy to assist.
